What actually determines timing isn't usually the calculation itself — modern compliance software runs energy models quickly once inputs are entered. The bottleneck is almost always plan completeness. A consultant working from a full, dimensioned floor plan with a clear window schedule and specified HVAC/water heating equipment can move fast. A consultant working from incomplete sketches has to go back and forth clarifying details, which is what actually stretches timelines from a day to a week.

For new construction and larger commercial projects, expect somewhat longer timelines — often 2–5 business days — simply because there's more to model: a complete building envelope, potentially multiple HVAC zones, solar PV and battery storage sizing for new homes under the 2022 Energy Code, and more complex mandatory measure checklists.

A practical tip for keeping your timeline tight: submit complete plans the first time. Include a floor plan with room-by-room square footage, a window schedule noting size and type for every window, your proposed HVAC system (make/model if known, or at minimum the system type and efficiency rating), water heater specifications, and insulation values for walls, ceiling, and floor if known. The more complete this package, the less back-and-forth is needed before your report can be finalized.

For projects on a tight permit deadline, communicate that upfront — many consultants can prioritize rush requests, but it's far easier to plan for a fast turnaround from the start than to request an expedite after a report is already queued behind other work.
